The Business of Feeling Good in Style

Updated: Aug 11, 2019

In the fast paced lifestyle today, putting your best foot forward is not only about looks, society is becoming generally more health conscious. While people are playing down the law about what to wear for work and play, many businesses in the beauty, fashion and lifestyle industries are now prepared to go further than just looking good in appearance or dressing for success. Though the aesthetic industry is booming, women especially are putting emphasis on 'health' in their shopping to-do list for wellness and sustainable healthy living for balance.

According to broad consumer statistics and survey, men are following suit. Though, women still want to look 'perfect' through cosmetic surgery, Botox or liposuction on their 'to-do' beauty list, the business of 'looking good in style' is a growing multi-billion dollars industry not to be overlooked. Thus, it is companies rather than flesh and bone that should change.

To start with, how you look is largely depend on how to create and build your capsule wardrobe from dress to shoes. How you should dress in your office is largely dependent on your company's dress code and the cultural norms of your corporate brand. Companies normally issue employee handbooks with formalized dress codes, and that is a good starting point to understand what is appropriate to wear in the office. A good tip is to observe the attire of your supervisors and women who are similar rank to you in your office for a week or two whenever you start a new role. It is important to pay attention to what they wear when there is an important meeting as you will typically see the most formal of attire. Seeing what others wear is the best barometer in determining the level of formality in your office.

The business of Feeling Good at work

When most people think of a traditional office, they imagine suits, ties and button-down blouses. Now, businesses are relaxing their dress code policies in order to create a more welcoming atmosphere for workers. Some traditionalist lament this change, saying that dress codes at work help maintain professionalism. Others welcome the change. Giving the number of hours spent at work, employees should be comfortable more often than not, and heels and ties don't exactly make a comfy outfit. Besides, no one wants to be told what to wear. Dress codes maintain uniformity and professionalism. They also offer consistency, even if the rules do not require do not require extremely formal dress. A dress code also allows your company to define what's appropriate for employees to wear in the workplace. If left to interpretations, outfits can range from jeans and t-shirt to suit and tie, and include anything in between. Implementing an easy-to-understand dress code can prevent problems from occurring and ensure your entire staff dresses consistently. In early 2019, Goldman Sachs did away with tradition and dropped its formal business attire requirement. CNBC reports that this is a  "move once considered unthinkable for the wall street firm's leagues of monk-shoed partners and bankers with bespoke suits."
